Sports and Wellness Centre – Royal Veterinary College, Hatfield

Client: Royal Veterinary College
DB&P's Services: Building Services Consultant Engineers

The Sports and Wellness Centre set in the Hatfield countryside, provides a flexible and sociable space at the heart of the College’s campus. Professor David Church, Vice-Principal, said: At the Royal Veterinary College, we recognise the importance of physical exercise in psychological and physical wellbeing. The Sports and Wellbeing Centre will be a safe, welcoming, professional and ‘accessible to all’ facility which will help us promote activities, events and competitions which support the physical and mental wellbeing of the whole Royal Veterinary College community.”

The multi-use games area, “MUGA” Sports Hall can be arranged for partaking either badminton, basketball, volleyball, netball, hockey or table tennis. The centre also boosts an extensive range of modern and traditional sports facilities; including a Batak Board (a light reaction fitness machine designed to stimulate the mind as well as the body), a 12m climbing wall, a gymnasium / fitness room and a dance / aerobics studio.

The wholistic approach to wellbeing is reinforced by complementary health treatments ranging from sports therapy and massage to holistic treatments such as Indian head massages and Reiki.

The centre comprises three rectangular buildings, with different heights creating interest at roof level whilst respecting neighbouring properties. The buildings are clad in a combination of Siberian larch and high emissivity glass, configured in a louvred format to maximise natural light whilst reducing solar gains.
