Thorley Hall Barns - Saffron Walden, Essex

Client: J Tinney & Co Ltd
DB&P's Services: Building Services Consultant Engineers

An imaginative barn: office conversion located in the historical village of Thorley - Essex, this development is a credit to the vision of both the Client and Project Architect. Working in conjunction with the “educated” Client, who had established a well-defined brief, we were able to introduce modern technology to the various disciplines associated with the mechanical and electrical services and thus provide a truly contemporary office environment.

Of key importance to the Client and Planners was the protection / salvation of the Grade II listed barn; this coupled with the Client’s desire to create a “green”, high quality office, in which staff could enjoy a relaxed working atmosphere was a stimulating challenge for all concerned.

Heating and “comfort” cooling to the open plan offices is provided via a central VRF reverse cycle heat pump unit – in turn this serves a mixture of ceiling / wall mounted indoor units. The indoor units connect to a series of “control boxes” which enables wasted heat (when in a cooling mode) and wasted colth (when in a heating mode) to provide a degree of heat / colth recovery to those areas operating in the converse mode. Although, such renewable technology is often considered to be relatively expensive (certainly in comparison to a more basic / traditional DX system), the Client was able to offset 30% of the associated design, capital and installation costs against the Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) scheme – a Government funded programme to manage climate control; specifically designed to encourage businesses to invest in approved low carbon, energy-saving equipment.
