Centurion Golf Centre – St Albans

A key criteria of the Client’s brief for the Centurion Golf Club was to establish world leading golf facilities, combined with 5-star dining resources - set in luxurious surroundings whilst maintaining a relaxed and welcoming environment. Co-owner and driving force behind the project, Mr Scott Evans advised “Our aim is to focus on providing the very best facilities for our members and let the reputation and standing among the golfing fraternity evolve. The challenge is to create a quality product worthy of our location so close to central London and to be considered one of the finest available.”

No expense has been spared in creating the opulent clubhouse which sits lakeside with panoramic views across the surrounding countryside and the 18th green. The 80-cover restaurant, serviced by a state-of-the-art kitchen, is run by Michelin-Star chefs Chris and Jeff Galvin. The ground floor area includes conference facilities, meeting rooms and a fully stocked proshop; the public bar leads directly to relaxing lounge spaces which in turn open onto convivial patio spaces with seating areas accentuated by art pieces, sculptures and water features. The first floor features a member’s only bar which houses personal “whisky” lockers, such favourite tipples can be sampled on the secluded private balcony. “Umm – almost tempts me to take up golf……almost!” – Stephen Root.

The Sports and Wellness Centre set in the Hatfield countryside, provides a flexible and sociable space at the heart of the College’s campus. Professor David Church, Vice-Principal, said: “At the Royal Veterinary College, we recognise the importance of physical exercise in psychological and physical wellbeing. The Sports and Wellbeing Centre will be a safe, welcoming, professional and ‘accessible to all’ facility which will help us promote activities, events and competitions which support the physical and mental wellbeing of the whole Royal Veterinary College community.”

The multi-use games area, “MUGA” Sports Hall can be arranged for partaking either badminton, basketball, volleyball, netball, hockey or table tennis. The centre also boosts an extensive range of modern and traditional sports facilities; including a Batak Board (a light reaction fitness machine designed to stimulate the mind as well as the body), a 12m climbing wall, a gymnasium / fitness room and a dance / aerobics studio. The wholistic approach to wellbeing is reinforced by complementary health treatments ranging from sports therapy and massage to holistic treatments such as Indian head massages and Reiki. The centre comprises three rectangular buildings, with different heights creating interest at roof level whilst respecting neighbouring properties. The buildings are clad in a combination of Siberian larch and high emissivity glass, configured in a louvred format to maximise natural light whilst reducing solar gains.

Waendel Leisure Centre – Wellingborough

The Waendel Leisure Centre designed to Sport for England standards is located in the centre of Wellingborough. The extensive and modern leisure amenities are intended to appeal equally to the local / family community and the more dedicated / serious athlete. The Leisure Centre is certified to hold gala swimming events, with a 25m x 6 lane pool and seating for 200 spectators. The facility also includes a 13m learner pool, health and fitness suite, fully equipped gymnasium (boosting over 80 pieces of training equipment), multiple dance studios, high quality changing rooms, meeting rooms, a creche and full catering services.

Due to the extensive nature of the building and the wide diversity of mechanical and electrical service requirements, a total of 4No rooms were strategically located around the building. The ground floor plantroom houses the pool water treatment and filtration systems; the 1st floor plantroom contains boilers, domestic hot and cold water equipment, circulating pumps, LPHW heating pressurisation units, etc; the fitness suite and gymnasium are served via dedicated AHU plant at mezzanine floor level; with the main supply / extract AHUs serving the pool and general areas located at roof level.
